Egypt was one of the first countries in the Arab world which recognized the independence of Armenia in 1991. In March 1992, the diplomatic relations were established between the two countries. In May 1992, the first diplomatic mission of the Republic of Armenia in the Arab East was inaugurated in Cairo. However, the base for relationship between the two countries had long been established due to historical presence of Armenians in Egypt. The Egyptian-Armenian ties are deeply rooted as they go back in history to the pharaonic times. These relations have intensified during the Fatimid Caliphate, and they reached their highest level during the reign of Mohamed Ali Pasha, who ruled Egypt from 1805 to 1848. During that period, Armenians took over the highest administrative ranks in different offices such as the foreign ministry, the ministry of education, and the cabinet. In the past 15 years, Armenia and Egypt have succeeded in establishing excellent political, economic, cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation ties. In 1992, the Foreign Ministries of both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on conducting consultations in different spheres. Since 1997, the consultations were conducted regularly on an annual basis on the level of the Deputy Foreign Ministers. One of the recently held political consultations were held in Yerevan in June 2008 when both sides confirmed an excellent level of political relationship between both countries and the need to upgrade the level of bilateral economic cooperation to the level of political. Furthermore, Armenia and Egypt rendered mutual support to each other in international organizations on a number of important international issues. The countries also assisted each others candidates during different elections and voting. High-level delegations from both countries paid numerous reciprocal visits. For instance, the President of Armenia and the Speaker of Parliament visited Egypt in 1992 and 1997, respectively. H.E. Mr. Robert Kocharyan, President of Armenia paid an official visit to Egypt during April 14-16, 2007. The Prime Minister of Egypt paid an official visit to Armenia in 1992. In December 2005 the Prime-Minister of Armenia visited Egypt. On February 23, 2009,the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Mr. Edward Nalbandian paid an official visit to Egypt. Since the establishment of relations, Armenia and Egypt signed more than 40 bilateral legal documents: Agreements, Protocols and Memoranda of Understanding (See the Signed Agreement page).
